Level of English

The minimum level required is intermediate. See table below:

Beginner (1)	Little or no knowledge or experience of English	Common European Framework
Elementary (2)	Knows basic greetings and can ask and answer simple questions	A1
Lower Intermediate (3)	Can hold a basic conversation (e.g. describe family) with help. Some knowledge of grammar, including past and future tenses	A2
Intermediate (4)	Can hold a basic conversation without difficulty but can’t discuss more complex issues. Some basic grammar mistakes.	B1
Upper Intermediate (5)	Can discuss some complex subjects fluently. Has no problem with common grammatical constructions	B2
Lower Advanced (6)	Can discuss a wide range of subjects with occasional mistakes. Can write with few grammatical errors.	C1
Advanced (7)	Can discuss a wide range of complex subjects. Wide vocabulary. Can read newspapers and magazines without much difficulty. Mistakes are about style rather than structure.	C2

Course Structure

4 courses from late June to mid September (LAW 1, 2, 3 and 4)
1 course in January (LAW A)
Each course lasts 3 weeks (LAW A is 3 or 4 weeks)
Communication, reading and writing skills in a legal context
21 full hours in classroom + 10 hours teacher-assisted self-study per week
1:1 tutorials with class teacher

ILEC - New English for Law Examination and preparation course

We are very proud to announce that after 5 years of development Cambridge ESOL, the University of Cambridge faculty specialising in English Testing, is now offering the world's first ever accredited examination in English for Law. The examination is called ILEC (International Legal English Certificate) and will take place twice a year, in May and November. CAE are running six-week preparation courses for the ILEC test (minimum enrolment period is two weeks). The exam is aimed at upper-intermediate to advance learners of English and can be taken by law students and qualified lawyers alike. The exam has been long awaited by law companies around the world to externally validate the English abilities of their employees and for recruitment purposes.
