Visas

Students from some countries will need a visa to enter the UK. Here are some points to help you

Make sure you have all the relevant documents.
Convince the immigration official you will return to your country at the end of your course.
Show you can afford to pay for the course and living expenses in the UK.
Have a clear plan of your study.
Look at the British Council website at www.britishcouncil.org

If your visa expires while you are in the UK you can apply for an extension provided you remain in full time study.

Look for information on the Home Office website at www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk

Local Bus Timetable

Buy a weekly "Mega Rider" ticket from the bus driver (Monday to Saturday daytime).
Costs £10 and allows you to travel anywhere in Cambridge city.

General Information

Insurance and Health

CAE Standard Personal Insurance will cover the loss of valuables etc. but not the first £25 in any claim.

Members of EU countries see a doctor free but pay for medicine.

Non-EU citizens pay the first £50 for a consultation plus medicine.

Visitors to Britain are given free accident emergency treatment.

Valuables

If you are bringing valuables write your name on it.

CAE CANNOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR MONEY OR VALUABLES LOST.

For safety we advise private money is (a) held in sterling travellers cheques or (b) transferred to CAE bank account – you can draw your money each week from school.

Bring enough English money with you for the first few days
What to bring

A variety of clothes including a raincoat or waterproof jacket, a warm sweater/s or jacket and sports shoes.

Don’t forget to bring a racket if you play tennis.

Please also bring a passport size photograph for your CAE student identity card.
Telephoning

There is a pay phone at CAE to phone your family and friends.

Buy a student telephone card for £10.

At your homestay your host will take messages for you until 21.00. You MUST ask permission to use their telephone.

Students cannot receive telephone calls at school in class/lesson time.

Smoking

From 1 July 2007 it is illegal to smoke in public places, e.g. pubs, restaurants, buses, trains, schools etc.

Bus
Direct bus from airport to Cambridge. For information on bus timetables look at the www.nationalexpress.co.uk
Train
Train timetables available from www.nationalrail.co.uk
Car - From London
_Take the M11 from London to Cambridge.
_At the end of the motorway, when it changes to the A14 North/Huntingdon, turn left to Oakington/Dry Drayton (just past the crematorium)
_Turn left again to OAKINGTON (over the bridge).
_At the first crossroads in Oakington turn right to GIRTON.
_CAE is one mile from there, on the right just past the two pubs. If you get to the Church you have gone too far!

As it is home of one of the world's greatest universities, Cambridge has a lively student culture. Every day while the university is in session there are concerts, plays, meetings and lectures that are open to the public. There are six theatres in the city, two concert halls, several pop-music venues and a number of nightclubs. Of the fifteen cinema screens, three show foreign and minority-interest films.
