Meet the Staff

Paddy Mahony

Director of Professional Courses, has been teaching general, examination and business English since 1980, in Cambridge, Oxford and over a dozen European countries. His approach to business English is decidedly lexical, as is his approach to soccer, opera and putting his feet up. His poetry and dramas have been described by the Polish Ministry of Culture as 'excruciating and offensive', which he interprets as 'piercingly painful and challenging'. Paddy has an M.A. and D.Phil from Oxford and a Diploma in TEFL.

Ian Chisholm

Ian Chisholm is another member of our English for Lawyers team, who also specializes in English for Business. Originally from London, he lived and taught in that great metropolis and in Madrid before moving to the peace and tranquility of the Cambridge Academy. His unlikely hobbies include an encyclopedic knowledge of punk rock; more obviously, he loves cooking and Adnam's beers. He is not to be messed with and admits to having the lowest croquet ranking of the Professional Centre team. Ian has a degree in philosophy and an M.A. in Language in Multicultural Communities.

Dave Bartlett

Dave Bartlett has been teaching English since 1980; his experience also includes 5 years as Director of Studies in a London school, running EFL teacher-training courses, and 15 years as a Cambridge examiner. He loves France and also has a passion for MGs, music, lyric writing, double entendres and traditionally-brewed beer. Dave has a degree from the other university in Cambridge, a diploma in TEFL and is a qualified homeopathic practitioner.

Francoise DeRome

Francoise DeRome has been teaching English in her hometown of Cambridge since 1981, having previously taught French and German in Gloucester. Her professional experience includes teaching for the Cambridge Examinations, English for Business and English for Special Purposes such as English for Dentists, Engineering and Law. She has also been involved in the International Association for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (Iatefl) as the Coordinator for the Literature Special Interest Group, attending conferences in Vienna, Brighton and Swansea. Away from the chalkface, Francoise enjoys tennis, art, cinema, photography, live music and birdsong. She is occasionally to be found recharging her batteries by walking in the beautiful wild places of Britain.

Sharon Faqir

Sharon Faqir has been working in the Professional Centre since September 2010 after moving to Cambridge from Paris where she also taught Professional English. In 1981 she went to live in Germany for "about a year"... and didn’t return until 2010, having lived and worked in Tunisia and France, as well as Germany. She spent over 20 years working in the fields of finance and personnel before she came to her senses (or perhaps, lost her senses...) and moved into teaching. Travelling, experiencing other countries and cultures remains a passion; only now she is rediscovering her own. She spends far too much time on the internet and balances it out by walking in the often muddy fields around Cambridge with the family dog.
